Barons at Esher May 1st 2007

It’s not all Jaguars at Barons forthcoming sale – other entries include a 1933 Lagonda 3 Litre – but with an entry that includes an XK150 and several E-types it’s one that clearly has its heart in Coventry.

Although the entries will be coming in right up until a few days before the sale, Barons is giving Classic Driver readers an early preview of the cars that will appear in their next auction, to be held at The Sandown Park Exhibition Complex on May1st, with viewing on April 30th.

The opalescent silver Series 2 E-type FHC you can see above was originally a US car, but has been professionally converted to RHD and UK specification. Described as being in good overall condition, the car is said to have provided the vendor with reliable and economical classic transport during his 10-year ownership. Trimmed in contrasting red leather interior, this is an attractive E-type and, at £13000 - 16000, reasonable priced.

1958 Jaguar XK150DHC - £35000 - 39000

1970 Jaguar E-type S2 4.2 Roadster - £21000 - 27000
At the time of writing there were no less than four other E-types, a 1969 S2 4.2 2+2 Coupe (£12000 – 14000), a 1970 S2 4.2 2+2 (£11500 – 13000), a 1970 S2 4.2 Roadster (£21000 – 27000) and a 1972 S3 V12 2+2 FHC, modified to fast road/track specification and featuring a six-carb V12 prepared by marque-specialist Rob Beere for £20000 – 28000.

As we previewed recently, 2007 is the 50th anniversary of the XK150, and Barons have two cars entered so far, a 1960 XK150 3.8 S Specification FIA-papered car (that acheived a Top Hat class win last year at Spa) for £45000 - 49000, and a 1958 Jaguar XK150DHC - finished in red with red hide interior and black mohair hood - for £35000 - 39000. This car is equipped with a 3.4 litre XK engine, which is mated to a 4 speed, non overdrive manual gearbox. An extremely rare configuration.

Needless to say Jaguar saloons feature too, and pick of the crop must be the superb-looking 1953 Jaguar MKVII Saloon, £15,000 - 20,000, finished in black with magnolia leather and a car that may have had only two owners (and to have covered only 27,000 miles) from new.

1963 Jaguar MK 2.4 Saloon - £3000 - 5000

1953 Jaguar MKVII Saloon £15,000 - 20,000

1966 Jaguar MKII 3.4 Auto Saloon - £8000 - 10000

1953 Daimler Regency MKI Coupe by Barker - £16000 - 22000

There are other non-Jaguar entries but first, mention must be made of the 1953 Daimler Regency MKI Coupe by Barker at £16000 – 22000, a very rare car that’s ownership means, as Barons perceptively put it that, “You will never wave to a fellow driver of DF 302 Regency coupe while touring in France, Belgium or Italy, because your car is unique”.

Pick of the crop of the other cars is without doubt the 1933 Lagonda 3 Litre Sports Saloon by Weyman, estimated at £25000 – 35000. This car is a nice pre-War gentleman’s carriage with a ‘good badge’, lusty 3.0 litre six-cylinder engine and T8 4 speed manual transmission that makes an equivalent Bentley look decidedly expensive. Also on the pre-War car front is a 1928 Lea Francis Hyper DHC at £12000 - 16000 that has been part of a private collection for many years. We like the 1965 Volvo Amazon 122S Historic Racing Saloon, £11500 – 13500, a car that provides entry to many current historic racing series at a fraction of its build cost.
