Coys at The Autosport International Racing Car Show 13th Jan 2007

Becoming something of a tradition now, Coys will once again be holding a sale at the UK’s annual Autosport International Racing Car Show. With an entry of 50-odd cars, Coys will be trying to help prospective historic racers find cars for the 2007 season.

The highlight is undoubtedly the ex-Rothmans works Porsche 956, the car that finished 3rd overall at Le Mans in 1982 driven by Americans Hurley Hayward and Al Holbert. The estimate is ‘Refer Department’, as is the ‘J David’ 1983 ‘customer car’ Porsche 956 as entered by veteran racer John Fitzpatrick at the famous French 24 hours race that year (finishing 5th overall). The latter has been raced out of period, while the Rothmans example has been a museum exhibit (as befits its historical status) in the ‘90s. Fabulous cars and it will be interesting to see what happens on the day.

2001 Saleen S7R ex Daytona 24 Hours, British GT and FIA Championship £170,000 - 190,000

1968 Mini Cooper S Ex-Works Race Car £38,000 - 46,000

1965 Alfa Romeo 1600 GTA £45,000 - 55,000

1983 Porsche 956 - 102 The John Fitzpatrick Racing, 5th Overall 24 hours of Le Mans 1983 Refer Department

Slightly smaller, yet no less significant, is the 1968 Mini Cooper S ex-works racing car of the type driven with great verve and gusto by the likes of John Rhodes, Warwick Banks, John Fitzpatrick and John Handley. Estimated at £38,000 – 46,000, the little car is just one of 6 very special fuel-injected Minis with cross-flow heads, the very zenith of circuit racers, ones that did battle with Escorts, Anglias and Mustangs of the time.

Also in the catalogue are several older historic saloons suitable for the well-known Top Hat race series, or even possibly as invitees at the Goodwood Revival. Cars such as the 1956 Sunbeam Rapier, £8,500 - 10,500, the 1950 Austin A40, £16,500 - 18,500, and the 1959 Volvo Amazon at £18,000 – 20,000.

11950 Austin A 40 Historic Touring Car £16,500 - 18,500

1956 Sunbeam Rapier 'Goodwood Race Car' £8,500 - 10,500

956s apart, the sale also includes some other interesting Porsche motor cars. Racers such as the ex-Dick Barbour Racing ALMS 2000 911 GT3-R at £48,000 - 55,000, an ex-Carrera Cup 1995 993 911 for £60,000 – 70,000, and the interesting 1970 914/6 2.7 Carrera GT, a car that was converted to a GT in period and raced in Canada for £28,000 – 35,000.

Ferrari 'The Chris Rea' 196 SP Dino £38,000 - 45,000

1970 Porsche 914/6 GT £28,000 - 35,000

It’s not all racing cars and the catalogue also has a 1995 Aston Martin Virage Volante 6.3 estimated at £65,000 – 75,000 and a wonderful 1974 Ford Capri RS3100 at £10,500 – 12,500, a real time-warp machine in Sebring Red with its correct triple gold coachlining.

Finishing on something completely different, how about the special Ferrari 196 Dino specially made for rock star Chris Rea? Based on a Ferrari 328 chassis, the aluminium-bodied car is more of a homage to the ‘shark-nose’ cars of the early ‘60s than a true replica, but, considering the investment made by its musician owner is an interesting alternative to the many faux Jaguar C- and D-Types out there.
