The Japanese Lamborghini Owners Club team (JLOC), entered two Lamborghini R-GTs in last weekend’s Monza 1000kms. The two matt black cars, based on the Murciélago certainly provided some high-voltage excitement to the LMES event. It was only an engine problem that robbed the Peter Kox/Norman Simon #64 car of victory in the GT1 class.

JLOC team head Isao Noritake boss could only ponder ‘what might have been’. Despite a shortage of testing miles, and a lack of grip, the two Japanese-entered cars had qualified fifth and sixth in practice. The Simon/Kox car ahead of its sister, driven by Apicella/Yamanishi/ Wada.

After the latter car retired with engine trouble it was down to the experienced pairing of Simon (Le Mans Spyker driver) and Kox (2005 Le Mans Aston Martin DBR9 works driver) to realise the potential of the spectacular black cars. Before the first driver change (two hours) #64 was already in second in class, the lead of which it gained just a short time later. After another change, with just 25 laps to go, the car came into the pits to retire with a broken engine.

The first three places in GT1 therefore fell to Ferrari with the 550 Maranello. Pescatori/ Bartyan/Seiler, beating Team MenX (Pergel/ Enge/ Janis) into second place while the Russian Age Racing car of Bouchut/ Fomenko/Vasiliev was third.

The next round of the Le Mans Endurance Series will be at Silverstone on 12 - 13 August. For further information see www.lmes.net.
