H&H sold their featured lot, the 1953 Bentley 'R' Type Drophead Coupe for £123,625 at their recent Buxton sale. Looking ahead to 2005, a highlight of the International Historic Motorsport Show sale will be the ex-Dick Protheroe Jaguar.

The Bentley sold at the lower end of the estimate – but still a significant sum for a post-war convertible with bold styling and colour scheme - while the superb 1950 MK VI Woody Shooting Brake was a non-seller. Another 1950s limousine went well though, the 1953 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith selling way over estimate at £43,000 and a more modern Bentley, the 1996 Continental 'R' Coupe selling strongly at £58,050.

Neither Ferrari 400 sold, but of the other cars we singled out in our preview the 1998 AC Cobra Superblower was on-estimate at £44,075, the very attractive 1933 Lagonda 16/80 Four Seat Tourer for £37,087 (high end of estimate, while the restoration project 2-Litre went for £16,125), and the 1925 Rolls-Royce 20 HP Doctors Coupé for a good £26,875. Mention must also be made of the £31,981 achieved by the 1971 Jaguar E-Type V12 Roadster. These cars’ prices can be all over the place from the heady days of the 80s collecting boom and it’s good to see a strong result for an obviously well-presented car.

1958 Jaguar MK VIII - Sold for £4,192

Also on the Coventry front, the 1958 Jaguar MK VIII sold for a very reasonable £4,192, so someone’s got a big old classic car for little money, while the 1958 Jaguar XK150 FHC went for £22,037. Sadly the Volvo rally car failed to sell but this very nice little 1967 Austin Mini Cooper 'S' MKII (eligible for pre-1967 rallying) did, for a modest £6,450.

Looking ahead to Stoneleigh in 2005, H&H have attracted some early entries (competition-themed as befits the venue) such as the famous 1961 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 FHC ‘CUT 7’, the first of Dick Protheroe’s competition E-Types with this registration, the second of course being the ‘low-drag’ car. It’s estimated at £275,000 – 325,000 and as a past runner at the Goodwood Revival (it also appeared at the 2004 Le Mans Classic, and is a regular ‘Gentleman Drivers’ car) it represents a good opportunity for someone to get behind the wheel of an original period-history car for a fraction of the cost of a ‘genuine’ lightweight E-Type or Ferrari SWB. It’s also beautifully prepared with a very strong motor. There’s also a 1966 Brabham BT11A single seater – ex-Denny Hulme – for £90,000 – 120,000, and a 1972 Surtees TS11 Formula 5000 for £30,000 – 40,000.
