Bonhams at Hendon 1st March 2004 - Preview and Lotlist

Bonhams first visit of 2004 to the RAF Museum at Hendon has over 40 classic cars under the hammer, at prices to suit all pockets. For those on a larger budget one of the highlights is a 1937 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Phantom III Sedanca De Ville estimated at £35 - 40,000.

Powered by a 7.3 litre V12, the pre-war Phantom III bears comparisons with the present-day Phantom from the Goodwood manufacturing plant. Powerful, dignified and capable of effortless distance-covering, the car was yet another R-R contender for the title ‘best car in the world’. This example is finished in the classic ivory/black colour scheme and has been the subject of extensive maintenance and restoration since returning to Europe from the USA in 1988.

Amongst the other cars in the sale, the LHD 1965 Maserati Sebring Series II Coupé, £14 - 16,000, looks attractive. A rare example having retained its original fuel injection set-up, it was imported into the UK from Italy around 2001 and the elegant GT benefits from a recent re-paint plus the replacement of several mechanical items such as the brake master cylinder and fuel pump.

Two Bentleys are in the sale, a 1955 ‘R’ Type Standard Steel Saloon, £12 - 15,000, and a 1970 T1 Saloon at £11 - 13,500. The ‘R’ Type looks particularly attractive, being a genuine three-owner car, the last of which being the well-known RREC member Jack Howes. It comes complete with original handbook, tools, two brown leather fitted suitcases and a period radio.
