Bonhams & Butterfields at Hershey, Pennsylvania USA 10 Oct 2003 - Results Bonhams and Butterfields recent Sale at Hershey featured a strong Automobilia element, with the motor cars amounting to 28 lots. Fourteen of these were from the H. Lee and Elisabeth Turner Collection of predominantly American vehicles. As a result a significant part of the Auction proceeds were automobilia items, like this ‘Folie de la Vitesse’ (Speed Fool) mascot from 1921-22 selling for $8,625.

Right on the estimate this nickel silvered bronze object was made by Pierre de Soete especially for the 1921 and 1922 Paris Motor Shows. Other significant pieces sold included a 'Mystery' mascot by Charles Sykes, circa 1911 for $27,600, a Nude mascot by Mappin & Webb from the 1920's for $6,325, and a magnificent 'Vitesse' opalescent glass mascot by Rene Lalique, French, introduced 17 September 1929 for $40,250.

Seventeen of the car lots were sold, the highest price achieved by a C1930 Bugatti Type 44 Tourer at $127,100, followed by a 1946 FIAT one-off Coupé/Roadster at $80,500. The delightful 1936 Rolls-Royce 25-30 Four Door Saloon by Mayfair selling for $24,150.

Some of the European exotica like the 1956 LHD Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk1 Drophead (estimate $85 – 100,000) and the 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ (estimate $100 – 130,000) did not sell.

Bonhams next Motor Car sale is on 12th November at Harrogate, with their ‘highlight’, Christmas events being at London Olympia on 1st December and at Gstaad on 19th December for Bonhams Europe’s celebrated Ferrari Motorcars, Automobilia and Wristwatch Sale.
