23rd July 2003 Bonhams at Lords Cricket Ground - Preview

Bonhams have assembled a thirty car lotlist at the home of English cricket, Lords in St John’s Wood North London, next week preceded by the usual sale of automobilia. With a predominantly pre-war entry, one of the highlights is a 1932 Lagonda 2 litre supercharged Low Chassis T3 Tourer at £33,000 – 37,000.

Bonhams describe this car as ‘one of the rarest and most desirable lagonda models’ and few would argue the attractiveness of the car with its sportingly low chassis and cut-away doors. Finished in black with green leather interior, the car has been maintained by vintage engineering specialists and would be perfect for tours both home and overseas.

Prices of Austin-Healey’s sports car models have been on the rise recently and included in the auction is a 1958 100/6 in BRG over Old English White at an estimate of £17,000 – 20,000. A rarer two-seat only model (rather than the ubiquitous 2+2), the catalogue photo shows a nice looking car that has been a concours contender in the past.

Your reviewer’s eye was caught by the c1951 Allard P1 Saloon, £11,000 – 14,000. Finished in Midnight Blue this V8-powered two-door saloon is of the type that won the Monte Carlo rally and could be seen as a an Aston Martin DB2 alternative – for a £10,000 discount.

A significant number of cars in the sale are from the Rolls-Royce and Bentley stable, the first lot being a 1970 Bentley T1 Saloon. Requiring some work to the brakes and front suspension, at a price of £4,000 – 6,000 with No Reserve someone is going to buy a car from the right manufacturer (Bentley), for very little money, and in doing so have a nice mode of transport for driving round town or parking in the paddock at VSCC events. An Aston-owning friend of mine also pointed out that the 1971 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible, at £15,000 – 20,000, would be good value compared to a soft-top Bentley, let alone Aston V8 Volante.

The sale is located at Lords Cricket Ground, in the Nursery Pavilion, with automobilia starting at 2.00pm and cars at 4.00pm.
