Goodwood will celebrate the famous 9-hour races of the 1950s with a race into the darkness at the Revival meeting on September 7th, bringing night racing back to the classic circuit on the 50th anniversary of the first Goodwood 9-Hours.
The Freddie March Memorial Trophy, featuring Aston Martins, Ferraris, Jaguars and Maseratis, will re-create the spirit and atmosphere of the days when the cars raced from mid-afternoon until midnight. "This enables us to add a new dimension to the Revival,"said Lord March, " and I hope the sight of the cars racing into the dusk will bring back memories for those who remember the Goodwood 9-Hours, while for younger enthusiasts, the race will be a dramatic finish to the Saturday with headlights ablaze and Goodwood feeling just like it used to be."
With just a few weeks to go before the fifth Revival, Lord March also revealed that American world champion Freddie Spencer will race in the Lennox Cup motorcycle races, taking on Barry Sheene and Wayne Gardner in a spectacular battle of the champions. This will be the first time that the three great legends of bike racing have lined up on the grid together, Sheene defending his unofficial title of "King of Goodwood".
Former Grand Prix star Johnny Herbert makes his first appearance at the Revival, driving a 1958 DKW in the St Mary's Trophy saloon car race and a Ferrari 330LMB in the RAC Tourist Trophy Celebration race.
The 2002 Revival meeting also sees triple Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro team up with Gregor Fisken for the Tourist Trophy in a lightweight E-Type Jaguar, the pair having won this race last year.
The Goodwood grids are now complete, the Whitsun Trophy featuring no less than seven Ford GT40s with drivers Darren Manning, Jackie Oliver and Richard Attwood heading the line-up for this Ford v Ferrari battle of the great sports-racing cars of the 1960s.
Other highlights for 2002 include Damon Hill driving a BRM in a special tribute to his father Graham Hill who won so many races at Goodwood in the circuit's heyday of the late 50s and early 60s. Stirling Moss will share a Jaguar MkV11 with Rowan Atkinson in the saloon car race; Bobby Rahal dusts off his helmet and overalls for the TT, sharing an Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ1 with Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason; Patrick Tambay and Henri Pescarolo share an AC Cobra in the TT; and Jason Plato makes his Goodwood debut in a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.
