While a gorgeous Vignale-bodied 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter Cabriolet (est. 2–2.4m US dollars) and a 1969 Lamborghini Miura S (1–1.3m dollars) spearhead Bonhams’ Scottsdale sale in 2020, we think it’s telling of the changing trends in the market we outlined here that two ultra-rare, 250mph hypercars are also right at the sharp end of the catalogue. Both the Koenigsegg CCX (900,000–1m dollars) and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 (1–1.3m dollars) are 2008 models and very tastefully specified. It’s worthy of note that the Bugatti’s estimate is higher than the ’Egg’s, despite the fact that only 30 of the Swedish ground missiles were built versus 450 Veyrons.
Call us crazy, but despite the aforementioned exotica, our favourite car from the sale is arguably the 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300TD, estimated at 35,000–45,000 dollars. Presented in the charming shade of China Blue, the W123 estate was comprehensively restored over the course of three years and reminds us of the Italian design visionary Michele Lupi’s car – should the car return to Europe, a trip to The Ice in St. Moritz should be high up on the new owner’s agenda.
