Description
Fiat 124 Abarth Rally 1974 - The Italian rally legend. CHASSI - 124 CSA 0074983 It is estimated that there are only 400 examples known and registered by lovers and connoisseurs of the model. The Fiat 124 Abarth Rally is one of the most iconic competition versions ever produced by Fiat, combining the elegance of the 124 Spider with the sporty engineering of Abarth. Developed in the early 1970s, this model was designed to compete in the demanding world of international rallying, and was homologated for Group 4 of the World Rally Championship (WRC). Launched in 1972, the 124 Abarth Rally stood out for its performance and reliability in events such as the Acropolis Rally, where it won with Rauno Aaltonen at the wheel, or the Rally of Portugal, where it took podiums with drivers such as Markku Alén. Produced until 1975, it was a key part of Fiat's evolution in competition, preceding legends such as the Lancia Stratos. Its technical characteristics clearly differentiated it from the normal Spider version: from the 1.8-litre engine with 130 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, reduced weight thanks to the use of aluminium in the doors and bodywork and fibre in the bonnet, boot and removable hardtop, instead of the traditional canvas top. The suspension was reinforced to meet the demands of rally sections, and the disc brakes on all four wheels ensured effective braking even in the toughest conditions.Visually, the 124 Abarth Rally was distinguished by its matt black bonnet, which prevented reflections when driving, and by striking colours such as Rosso Corsa red, Positano yellow, France blue or Bianco Spino white. Production of around 1,013 units was announced, but enthusiasts and connoisseurs of the model estimate that only 400 or so were registered, making it a rare and highly valued model among collectors. Compared to the conventional Fiat 124 Spider, the Abarth was a machine much more focused on performance and competition, with racing components, aggressive looks and a truly sporty character. The Fiat 124 Abarth Rally remains to this day a symbol of the Italian passion for motorsport and one of the great rally machines of the 1970s. Delivered in 1974 to its first owner Richard Heils in Frankfurt, it was used until 1981 when it was stored in a garage until the early 2000s when it was sold to its second owner Philipp Eller, Then in 2006 it was bought by Abarth specialist Guy Morenhout who began restoring it and sold it to the last owner in 2007 who dismantled and reassembled it, beginning a meticulous restoration with a level of originality and care for detail far above the average.
