Taking over from the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 BB, which had been launched to much fanfare at the 1971 Turin Motor Show, the Ferrari BB 512 represented a major evolution, whilst retaining the DNA of its predecessor with a flat-12 ‘boxer’ engine mounted behind the driver, hence its name of the ‘Berlinetta Boxer’. Developed from competition, its powerful 4943 cc engine produced 360bhp and offered improved torque and a more flexible power delivery. From a purely aesthetic point of view, the BB 512 was a bombshell when it was introduced. Designed by the famous coachbuilder Pininfarina, its styling differed slightly from that of the 365 GTB/ 4 BB. More elegantly styled, thanks to a system directing the airflow towards the engine, its design was worthy of a prototype and has not aged a day! Ultimately, only 929 examples of the 512 BB left the Maranello factory before it was replaced by the version with fuel injection.
The model we are presenting was delivered new on 5 January 1981 by the dealership Ferrari Monaco Motors Cavallari, as the car’s original warranty booklet confirms. Its first owner, a captain of industry from Monaco, sold the Ferrari just two years after buying it. And so, in January 1983 the Ferrari BB was bought by the Parisian art dealer Thierry Salvador. He too kept it for two years, before its current owner in turn acquired it in February 1985 from the Charles Pozzi dealership in Levallois-Perret. The BB has therefore been with its third owner for 35 years, an enthusiastic collector from Brittany, who is now forced to part with it in order to finance the purchase of the sailing boat of his dreams. Chassis no. 34469 shown here was originally maintained by Pozzi and has since been looked after by the Ferrari specialist Philippe Gardette of Auvergne Moteurs, who needs no introduction. The file for the car includes several bills for maintenance work, the most recent of them dating from 2015. This amounts to a total of more than 23,000 €, including the complete refurbishment of the wiring loom, the replacement of the manifolds, Ansa exhaust system and cambelt, as well as the overhaul of the air-conditioning compressor and a thorough clean of the engine. The car had a recorded mileage of 89,000km (55,300 miles) at the time and has only covered just over 4000km (2500 miles) since this major overhaul. Gardette also replaced the sodium exhaust valves, which have a reputation for being very fragile, with lead-free valves. The four 225/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX tyres have recently been changed and mounted on the original Cromodora wheels, which are in perfect condition. Aviation-type brake hoses were also fitted a short time ago, to ensure safer and more resistant braking. One feature which is unique to the best of our knowledge and has been confirmed by Philippe Gardette is that this car has the gearbox from a 512 BB LM, installed during the time it belonged to Thierry Salvador. The operation of the gearbox is identical to that of the roadgoing version, but the lubrication and oil cooling for the ‘box are specific to it. As regards its appearance, the Ferrari has always kept its original Nero finish, which was freshened up a few years ago, as well as its attractively patinated original interior, complete with beige leather Daytona seats, Nardi steering wheel and Pioneer radio, along with the toolkit in its storage compartment. In addition to its warranty booklet and service bills, the BB comes with photographs taken at Auvergne Moteurs during work on the car’s engine. This desirable example of the 512 BB with its remarkable history deserves consideration by fans of the model. You can bet that at this reasonable estimate this true ‘roadgoing prototype’ will add a new chapter to its story.
