Description

The long-overlooked Porsche 914 has more recently been recognized by enthusiasts not only as an important model in the history of the marque, but also for its incredible driving dynamics and competent character. At the top of the hierarchy of four-cylinder 914s lies the 2.0-liter model that debuted in 1973. Retaining the chrome-trimmed bumpers of earlier iterations, the 914 2.0 added a surprisingly torquey 100 hp engine and “side shift,” type 901 transaxle, which greatly improved the driving experience.

This 1974 914 2.0 was special ordered through Porsche dealer T.N.M. Lathrop, Inc. of Niantic, Connecticut. A classified ad on file shows the 914 for sale in December 1974, when it was purchased by Dr. Alex Rodriguez of Castro Valley, California. Dr. Rodriguez serviced the Porsche regularly during his ownership, as shown in records dating back to 1974. Following a move to Denver in 1983, Dr. Rodriguez sold the car to Joseph Brackman of New Palestine, Indiana, who used the Porsche sparingly, driving it three to four times a year over his 30 years of ownership. In 2011, this 914 was bought by enthusiast Robert Nellums of Lafayette, Indiana.

Nellums enjoyed the well-preserved 914 until a scratch on the fender dictated a respray, which became a fairly comprehensive restoration, documented by photos and invoices on file. In addition to new paint, the interior was re-trimmed in its original beige, the suspension and brakes were refinished and rebuilt, and dozens of other ancillary components were repaired or replaced. Importantly, a Porsche COA ordered by Nellums shows that this 914 was special ordered in a paint-to-sample metallic color. The car’s shade of Ice Green Metallic is a Porsche factory hue not commonly available on the 914.

The stunning presentation of this 914 was further improved upon by the consignor, who acquired the Porsche in 2018 and treated it to a comprehensive service and sorting at 914 Werke in Seattle. Thoroughly documented and possibly the only 914 in this unique shade, this is a 914 that must be among the finest of its type and is certainly worth your careful consideration.
