Description

Maserati earned a very respectful reputation in the late 40's and early 50's with its Formula I monopostos and 2-seat sports racers. In order to make some money to fund their race car department they entered the Grand Tourer market in 1947, first with the A6 1500, followed by the AG6 2000 and the AG6/54. That move was proven economically feasible but only a very low number were produced. A different approach was needed if they wanted to make a successful series production, reflecting their world famous race origin.
Maserati launched the beautiful all new 3500GT at the Geneva Car Show in early 1957 with a superleggera body made by Touring and, more importantly, with the detuned version of the powerful 3,5 l , 6 cylinder 350S twin-spark race engine with triple carburetors , still developing 220 HP.
In order to keep the demand strong , Maserati improved the car progressively over the years by adding center lock wheels , a limited slip differential and front wheel disc brakes in 1959 , a 5-speed gearbox in 1960 and rear disc brakes in 1962. In 1960 the 3500 GTI was introduced at the Geneva Car Show , with a Lucas mechanical fuel injection , now producing 235 HP.
A first Touring Convertible prototype was shown at the 1958 Turin Motor Show but it was the design by Michelotti of Carrozzeria Vignale as shown at the Paris Car Show in 1959 that went into production that same year. This time it didn't have the superleggera body but a steel body with aluminum boot lid and bonnet on a 10 cm shortened chassis .
Ten years after the introduction of the A6 1500, Maserati's first road car, it was the 3500 series that effectively achieved the transition for Maserati from a racing car to a road car manufacturer. For the first time, Ferrari had a real competitor , not just by performance but also in terms of sales. In total 2228 GTs were built of which only 242 were Vignale Spyders.
According to the factory records our 3500 GTI Spyder , chassis 1415, was built in July 1962 and thus had already all the listed updates plus the Lucas mechanical injection system. The car was ordered on the 4th of March 1963 and delivered to its first owner, Count Lorenzo Odetti di Marcorengo through the Maserati dealer in Milan on the 15th of March 1963. It is believed the car changed ownership twice before it was sold to the last owner in 2001, who used the car sparingly during a few years . Being a German engineer, he decided to do a complete restoration , phased from 2005 to 2008 , with the purpose of enjoying his Spyder on many summer rallies in Europe where the car proved to be faultless. There for he overhauled all the mechanics , including the engine and swapped the rather unreliable Lucas injection system for a correct set of Weber carburetors . The car was repainted in its original color of Grigio Albany and beautifully combined with the red Connolly leather , as per the Maserati certificate . Since the restoration it has benefitted from long-term fastidious care and the paint, panel gaps , interior and chrome still present very nicely.
This is a perfect opportunity to own and enjoy a timeless and stylish Spyder for hassle free, fast road touring and rallying at the most prestigious events.
The car comes with the Maserati Certificates , copies of the original order and delivery note , a manual , a copy of the German title and a current Belgian title.
