The History of the 280SL
In 1974, following the oil crisis of that period, Mercedes Benz presented the 280 SL, equipped with the 2.8-liter M110 twin cam capable of 185 HP, while the gradual transition from mechanical to electronic injection was underway continued until the early 80s.
In February 1980, on the occasion of a very light restyling of the interiors, the range was further revised and the 280SL was equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox, which combined with the use of aluminum engine covers, helped to reduce the weight of the cars and to save something in terms of consumption.
The new SL represents a masterpiece destined to remain in the books of the history of the automobile, above all for the genius of the slightly concave hardtop, which gives rise to the nickname of "Pagoda".
The lines of this spider are taut, dynamic and were apprecciated in the United States, where the Pagoda have always sold well, indeed, they were born precisely for that market.
The 280 follows the philosophy of the two previous versions: more than power (which reaches 170HP), the main objective is elasticity. The new 2.8-liter engine reaches 420Nm.
The 280 SL remained in production until March 1971 when a new generation of SL broke into the launch pad: the massive R107 which meets safety criteria much more restrictive than in the past, thus increasing size and tonnage.
The graceful 280 leaves the scene, but sets the production record: 23,885 units produced, of which 12,927 for the American market.
A “Pagoda” is a classic in demand all over the world, but between a well-preserved specimen and a professionally restored one, the price difference can be as high as 50%.
