PORSCHE 911 2.7S 175CV 1974

Porsche's long-running and much loved 911 sports car first appeared at the 1963 Frankfurt Show as the '901', but shortly after production proper commenced in 1964 had become the '911' following Peugeot's complaints about the use of '0' model numbers. The preceding Type 356's rear-engined layout was retained but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell and dropped the 356's VW-based suspension in favour of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. In its first incarnation, Porsche's single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat six engine displaced 1,991cc and produced 130bhp;

Porsche developed a reputation early on for their surprising performance from their small displacement rear-engine sports and racing cars. These "giant killers" could outperform cars with much higher horsepower figures by making light cars with incredible handling. This combination gave Porsches their truly unique driving characteristics and solidified their dedicated following of Porsche enthusiasts.

The first of countless upgrades to the perennial 911 came in 1966, two years after production had commenced, with the introduction of the 911S, which featured stylish Fuchs five-spoked alloy wheels and a heavily revised and more powerful engine. Improved handling courtesy of a lengthened wheelbase arrived in 1969 and then in 1970 the 911's air-cooled, flat six engine underwent the first of many enlargements - to 2.2 litres. By this time the models on offer had stabilised at three: the entry-level 911T ( Carburator version ), middle-ranking 911E and top-of-the-range 911S(Super sports version)

In 1974, 175 hp was big news, because the normal car could usually achieve only about 50 – 75 hp. The Porsche could sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, the maximum speed was measured at a stately 230 km/h. Please do not forget, we are talking about the 70s. The response to the gas pedal is direct, and typical of a 6-cylinder boxer, the car only develops its full sound and performance potential at more than 6,500 revs. In terms of torque the 911S achieve 235 nm .

Tester Fritz Reuter found that the the 911, has a a slight understeering driving behavior, but we all love this about the 911. The summer 1974 issue of auto motor und sport magazine compared to the 911 S with its main competitors: Mercedes 280 SLC, BMW 3.0 CSi and Alfa Romeo Montreal (8 cylinders). Incidentally, the Porsche was the weakest of the rivals with 175 hp at the time. Despite its shortage of horsepower, the 911 was the winner in the categories acceleration and top speed.
