The Volvo p1800 turned out to be a very successful model for Volvo. When sales began to tail off Volvo introduced the P1800 ES, a “shooting brake” version of the Volvo P1800 Coupé. The extra space created a very practical car and attracted a totally new buying public. The stand out glass rear window that functioned as the boot lid was later featured again in the Volvo 480 and C30. The Volvo P1800 was especially popular in the States. Our car together with many others was supplied to the States, more specifically California in 1973. In 2014 the car was exported to France where the previous owner used it regularly until 2018. Once he had ensured himself that the car was a sound proposition for restoration he embarked on a full nut & bolt restoration. The car was literally taken back to its bare bones. When reconstructing the car lots of new electric loom, screws, bolts and sealants were used. The bodywork had a complete re-spray in the original Alpine Blue finish. They also kept to the original light blue vinyl colour scheme inside the car. To complete the pretty picture outside, new Minilite’s were fitted. The car was also subjected to a thorough technical overhaul. The engine was taken back to its constituent parts, inspected and parts replaced where needed. Furthermore the crankcase got a fresh new red coat of paint as well as all tubing, nuts, bolts and other small parts being replaced. The transmission and overdrive were also subjected to a complete overhaul. It will come as no surprise that this Volvo P1800 ES runs as beautifully as a new car. The powerful engine is nice and supple and the transmission works perfectly.You really notice the benefit of the new shocks and suspension rubbers when driving. No doubt, this Volvo P1800 drives like a Volvo P1800 should. Not only is this car mechanically totally sound, it is also a feast for the eyes to behold. The bodywork is of course in great condition with lovely panelwork. The windows deserve a special mention as heat shielding windows were fitted during restoration. As one should expect, the paintwork is unblemished. The interior is simply gorgeous. All instruments and switches look fantastic and are in good working order. The characteristic ES seats with integrated headrests naturally form part of the interior inventory. The whole restoration process can be followed with the extensive amount of invoices available. All of the parts used are mainly new and sourced from Volvo P1800 specialist suppliers.
