EXTERIOR
Resplendent in Mineral White, this M5 gains a far more aggressively vented and aerodynamically efficient front bumper, larger side skirts and very subtly flared arches to cover the 20 inch alloy wheels. It looks every bit the part of a muscular super saloon. The Competition Edition goes even further and adds a large carbon fibre rear diffuser, carbon fibre rear spoiler, carbon fibre mirror covers and high gloss black grilles.

The Competition Edition was only available in two colours, Mineral White and Carbon Black. There is purported to be only 20 Mineral White cars in the country. The interplay of colours between the Mineral White paint, Sun Protection Glass, Diamond Cut Jet Black wheels and the blue brake calipers provide a superb contrast and an athletic yet discreet aesthetic.

INTERIOR
The M5 might be the highest performing sports saloon in the BMW stable but is it still a 5 series and needs to cosset the driver and passengers on all journeys. As ever, the duality of character is clear to see.

When entering the M5 you are greeted with flourishes of detail that hint of something special, yet the seats are hugely comfortable and supportive and the leather super soft and supportive. The interior is finished in Full Black Merino leather with Opal white stitching, alcantara headlining and Carbon Fibre trim. The leather is in excellent condition, the rear seats appear to have had minimal use and the interior presents incredibly well, as expected from the age and mileage.

All of the controls are grouped in a very ergonomic fashion, with all of the driving modes lined up on the centre console surrounding the gear shifter, allowing a driver to alter the stiffness of the suspension, steering weight and throttle response. Beneath the gearshift is the switch to alter the gear shift ferocity. All are independent of each other and two ‘M’ buttons on the steering wheel allow one to memorise their two favourite driving settings.

BMWs central control interface is now a paragon of reliability and ease of use. The F10 M5 uses idrive 4 and all of the functionality works as it should with a very clear menu system. Many of the features are shown on the heads-up display, which also has the very enjoyable M heads-up display function, Amongst other performance orientated features it gives you a digital rev-counter projected on the windscreen in front of you.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The S63 engine is another masterpiece of technical engineering from BMW Motorsport, blending huge performance with surprising fuel economy. The basic architecture is a V8 sporting a swept capacity of 4395cc with two, twin scroll turbos, one on each bank of the cylinders. The motive force is sent to the rear tyres via a 7 speed dual clutch transmission and an electronically controlled Active (torque vectoring) M-Differential.

The resulting headline figures for the Competition Edition are 592bhp, 516 lb ft of torque, a benchmark sprint to sixty in a claimed 3.9 seconds and a very limited V-max of 155mph.

On test drive this M5 feels incredibly potent and able to neutralise its weight the instant the throttle is pushed. When one is on a high-speed road attack sortie, the gearbox is incredibly quick and on the fastest shift programme slams the gears home with racecar aggression, yet also capable of.seamlessly shifting through the ratios with relaxing grace in the more comfortable settings. Breathing through a BMW M sports exhaust system, the Competition Edition is also the best sounding F10 M5.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The M5 Competition Edition comes with a beautiful set of Exclusive M Double-Spoke 601M light alloys wheels finished in Diamond Cut Jet Black. They catch the light beautifully and match the Mineral White paint to perfection.

The tyres are a set of Pirelli P Zeros with the correct BMW ‘N’ rating. The front axle is sized at 265/35/20 and the rear axle a mighty 295/30/20. All show reasonable tread.

HISTORY FILE
First registered on the 08/12/2016, this M5 has had two owners in total.

It was supplied new by Dick Lovett Bristol who also carried out the running-in service and first service at 13,721 miles as part of the BMW Service Inclusive Package which covers service consumables for 5 years or 50,000 miles (whichever comes sooner) from the point of first registration.

The car is currently due a service, which is booked in under the Service Package, and will cover the car until December 2021.
