Description

The much sought-after Ferrari 246 Dino GT was named after Enzo Ferrari's son Alfredino, who died in 1956, aged 24 years. Enzo Ferrari credits his son with the inspiration for a series of successful small and medium capacity V6 racing engines built by Ferrari from 1956, and in turn the name was given to a new line of mid-engined production Ferrari V6 coupés, which first went on sale in 1969. The Dino 246GT has proved to be one of the most satisfying and successful automobiles built by Ferrari and paved the way for the emerging generation of mid-engined Ferraris. It is widely regarded as one of the best-handling and most gratifying automobiles of the early 70s, it is one of the most attractive, delicately balanced designs ever produced by the masters at Pininfarina. As a result Dinos have enjoyed a well-deserved recent surge in popularity.

Built as a tribute to his son Alfredino, the 206 was the lightweight GT offering stunning performance with Italian flair. Initially powered by a transverse mounted two-litre V6 with 160hp, the 206 Dino afforded a dynamic driving experience all round. It would be replaced after a short run of 150 cars to the 246 in 1969.

The 246 lasted for three series, each with subtle differences between. The L-Series cars followed on from the 206, with a number of exclusive features that disappeared in later cars. Most noticeably, the headrests were mounted on the bulkhead and the wheels retained the spinners from the 206. Later M & E series cars would introduce 5-bolt wheels, traditional seats and later, a GTS variant.

Arguably the purest variant with the added power over the 206, this L- Series Dino is one of just 357 examples and was completed at the factory in March 1970, ahead of delivery to its first owner in May of the same year to Mr Lencioni of Lucca, Italy.

Presented in the elegant period combination of Grigio over Nero, this L series benefits from desirable terry cloth seat inserts, only available on 206 and early 246 cars. This example benefitted from a thorough restoration between 2008 and 2010 and since then, has resided within a large collection. We have since tended the cars every mechanical need with no expense spared, including a major service in preparation for sale.

This delightful example is available to view immediately at our showrooms just outside London.
