GENERAL

Designed and built by Pininfarina and known as the famous Turin coachbuilder's first volume-produced car, the Spider brought a level of refinement and mechanical sophistication to small sports cars that made its competitors look outdated.

To satisfy demands for increased performance, upgraded ‘Veloce’ versions of the Sprint coupé and Spider convertible were introduced for 1956. Although visually almost identical to the ‘Normale’ models, under the skin a Veloce was a completely different beast with a widely distinctive feel.

The new Giulietta Veloce was soon being raced with success, winning its class competition in the 23rd Mille Miglia and finishing 11th overall. Other class competition victories were achieved in the Coppa Dolimiti, Tour de France, and the Alpine Rally was won outright by the Veloce.

EXTERIOR

This Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce is presented in a very nice looking red paintwork. The paintwork must be at least around 10 years old, but it’s still almost perfect and no flaws are showing through, which is a testament to the standard of the work carried out.

The Alfa Romeo archives confirm this car to be an original Veloce model built on September 3rd 1960, and sold by the US importer Hoffmann Motor Company from New York. It spent its life in dry and sunny Nevada until it was imported into Germany in 1986.

Alfa Romeo’s archives also state that the car’s original colour was sky blue. Although a lovely shade, it would almost be a shame to return it to i’s original livery considering the quality of the current paint the car is wearing.

The brightwork is in very good condition and the front and rear bumpers are new stainless items. The front grille has some slight surface corrosion bleeding through the original chrome, and although there is some room for improvement on this detail, it doesn’t distract from the car’s overall appeal.

The rubbers and body fittings are in good shape and look neat. The black canvas convertible top is in good shape and does not require any attention.

The wheels are in a good driver’s condition and are shodded with good tires.

INTERIOR

The dashboard is presenting well and the two-spoke black rim steering wheel is the correct one, complete with metal horn ring and centerpiece.

The dashboard and instruments are in good original condition and the trio of Veglia gauges are all functioning as they should. The odometer is showing 63.459 km. A period-correct Blaupunkt radio finishes of the elegant dashboard design.

The black vinyl seats with red piping are in good condition, as are the carpets and door panels.

The rear luggage compartment is finished in satin black and comes with the original rubber floor mat and jack.

ENGINE

The engine compartment is tidy and clean for a driver’s quality car. The engine is in perfect health and performs flawlessly. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that makes the car a real joy to drive.

We believe the original engine unit has been replaced somewhere in the past by an equally well performing unit that was fully rebuilt. Running on two twin Weber carburetors, it feels very powerful, and it’s almost unimaginable how much power can come from such a small engine.

Rarely have we come across a car so well sorted mechanically. It would be more than possible to step into this car and drive it daily right away, it really is in that condition.

BODY

The undercarriage of the car is in perfect health, both structurally and mechanically.

There are some restoration pictures of the car going back a long time, showing the replacement of the outer sills. It is clear from these pictures that at no point in its life, this car has suffered from heavy corrosion, unlike most other examples.

PAPER TRAIL

This car comes with many invoices, an email from Alfa Romeo confirming its identity, an older valuation report and German registration documents.
