MODEL HISTORY
The W124 Series has always been known for its strength and reliability serving many people in many countries around the world. This model was one of the cars that helped re-inforce the Mercedes Benz reputation for build quality. This series of Mercedes were made in many variants and the E500 is one of the rarest. Back in the late eighties Mercedes were looking to produce a performance version of the W124, however, its engineering department were fully occupied with the development of the new S class so Porsche were consulted to assist in the build and design of the new car.

When the design was ready, it was found that its widened fenders didn’t fit through the W124 assembly line in Sindelfingen in several places so Porsche were also commissioned to assemble the car. The production process involved Mercedes-Benz parts delivered to Porsche’s “Reutter-Bau” plant in Zuffenhausen where the 500 E chassis were hand-assembled. When finished the chassis were transported by truck to the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Sindelfingen to be painted. Once painted the varnished chassis were then shipped back to Porsche’s “Rössle-Bau” in Zuffenhausen where the engine was put in and the car completed. The final inspection and shipment the cars were again returned to Sindelfingen. The process took 18 days per car. The results were a super sports saloon with performance of 6.1 seconds to 60 mph, a top speed of 161 mph and 480 Nm of torque.
