The world’s most eclectic Porsche collection is up for sale

Comprising veritable Porsche icons such as the Carrera 2.7 RS and charming curios including dragster and limousine variants of the classic 356, The Taj Ma Garaj Collection of the late John Dixon is an eclectic Porsche paradise. Now, RM Sotheby’s will offer the collection entirely without reserve…

The well-known Ohio-based philanthropist and collector John Dixon lovingly amassed one of the world’s finest and most eccentric collections of Porsches and Volkswagens over three decades. On behalf of his family, RM Sotheby’s has the honour of rehoming the cars for which Dixon felt so passionately – on 28 September in Dayton, Ohio, the Canadian auction house will offer the Taj Ma Garaj Collection, which also includes a superb selection of rare automobilia, entirely without reserve.

While the collection is spearheaded by a handful of Porsches that would pique the interest of the most serious of collectors, including an ultra-rare matching-numbers 1957 Porsche 356 A 1500 GT Speedster (est. 1.5–2m US dollars) and a first-series 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Touring (400,000–450,000 dollars), it’s the quirky and fun models elsewhere in the catalogue that raised our interest the most.

Take the unique Porsche 356 limousine, for example, built by the Ohio-based master customizer Don Boeke for the wedding of Dixon’s daughter (150,000–250,000 USD). Constructed from several stripped 356s, the spectacular limousine is jam-packed with exquisite and authentic features, including rich wood trim throughout, a cabin Fahrenheit thermometer and an intricate flowery ashtray, said to ‘cater to period needs’ – make of that what you will. We also particularly love the 1970 Volkswagen Beetle with its floral bodywork handcrafted entirely from wrought iron (40,000–60,000 USD).
