OVERVIEW

One of the greatest things we get to do here at Northwest European is be long term caretakers and consultants for the cars we have sold to clients over the years. The Escort Cosworth examples are near and dear or our hearts, having traded quite a few of them over the years. This specific example was sold by us in 2017, and has now returned for sale here. This is a unique example, and easily one of the fastest of all Escort Cosworths we have driven.

The Ford Escort RS Cosworth was Ford of Europe’s answer to creating a competitive Grp A rally contender. Based on a shortened AWD Ford Sierra floorpan, they mated it to the “new” Escort bodyshell. However, no panels are really interchangeable with the standard Escort. Flared fender, large wings, scoops, and vents all designed with the goal of homologation for Grp A helped distinguish the car’s silhouette.

For that homologation to be awarded FIA regulations required 5,000 examples to be built. The Escort Cosworth was a successful road car, and Ford ended up producing over 7,000 before the end of production in 1996.

This car was originally built in Germany as a joint project between Richter Motorsport and Autohaus Wagner (a main Ford dealer in the region) to showcase what could be done with this potent platform. Richter used it as a marketing piece for their business, and as such, they went all out on the build. The car was built in the late 1990s, and then later imported into the US (through Sun International), and resided with the original USA owner through 2017, where it was then sold to another rally enthusiast in the USA. While the true chassis mileage is unknown, the current 10,500 showing on the odometer is representative of the mileage since the build was commissioned.

Engine/Transmission/Differentials - Stock block increased from 2.0L to 2.3L with Grp A internals, Garrett turbo, RS500 intercooler, remapped ECU, oil cooler, Mountune cams, Grp A wastegate, 3” Mongoose exhaust, carbon fiber valve cover, revised gearbox ratios, short shift kit, Quaife differentials.

Suspension/Brakes/Wheels/Tires - H&R coilover suspension, poly bushings, OMP front strut brace, Tar-Ox 6 piston front brakes Compomotive MO wheels (18x8), 235/40-18 tires.

Exterior - WRC rear spoiler (carbon), WRC front bumper/spoiler (carbon), Morette twin headlight conversion, custom gold paint color change (full – engine bay, door jambs, even under the carpet – sprayed as a shell).

Interior - Largely original, with upgraded Konig seats, RS style steering wheel, and aluminum shift knob.

Media - This car was featured in Performance Ford Magazine in March 2000, Sport Compact Car in June 2001, as well as various H&R Special Springs North America advertising. Scans of the Performance Ford and sample advertising are in the pictures below. Copies of the magazines are included with the sale of the car.

The opportunity to own a Ford Escort Cosworth RS is already rare, with ~7000 in total worldwide production. Even rarer is to own one in the USA, with less than 35 known to be stateside. Rarer still is to own one that is legally imported and titled. Add that to the heavy level of modification, and you have a weapons grade weekend toy that will ensure you are the only one at the local club meet with such a machine.
