If we were to choose just one generation of Mercedes, it would undoubtedly be the legendary W123. With nearly three million cars built, the Mercedes W123 is still a common sight today. Considered one of the firm’s most durable models, it is not unusual to find cars which have covered more than 500,000km (310,000 miles). The W123 made its mark on account of its passive safety features with progressive crumple zones and side impact bars. Its designers even included an airbag in their brief, but in the end, this was only offered as a very expensive option in 1982. Regarding the mechanical specifications, the manufacturer offered an impressive range of 16 different engines, with 4, 5 or 6 cylinders and both carburettor and fuel-injected versions. This wide choice contributed to the model’s success. Considered nowadays as a classic, the W123 coupés and estates are the most sought after variants.
The model which we are presenting is a 280 TE estate, delivered new in the USA in 1983. It was imported into France at the start of the 1990s and has had five successive owners. Converted to run on LPG in 1997, the estate has nonetheless retained its dual-fuel system, also using lead-free petrol, which remains in working order. In 2005, the car’s current owner purchased this 280 TE, which joined his collection made up solely of models bearing the three-pointed star. Always kept in a closed garage, its owner had the car maintained and restored at considerable expense. Altogether, nearly 45,000 € has been spent over the past 15 years. In 2015, the 280 TE was given a complete respray in Chrysopalgrün, and the following year, it was the turn of the interior (leather and carpets) to be completely refurbished. In terms of its appearance, this model therefore presents in very good condition and is free from corrosion. The car is fitted with a driver’s airbag, a rare option as it was horrendously expensive at the time. During our road test, we enjoyed the flexibility of the 6-cylinder engine, the operation of the manual gearbox and, more generally, the high standard of the car’s handling. An expert’s report from January 2019 confirms our impressions and valued the car at 32,000 €. Very well maintained and with only 167,000 miles (269,000km) on the clock, this good-looking 280 TE, which is almost impossible to find, still has a bright future ahead!

This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in Paris, at the Espace Champerret, France, on June the 23th, 2019.
