Description

"We are delighted to offer this very fine example of the Maserati Merak SS, a model that was essentially a lighter version of the Maserati Bora. First seen in 1972 with the SS introduced in 1976, the Merak was, and still is a striking motorcar today. The SS engine produced 15% more power over the standard Merak, raising horsepower to 220hp and with the weight of the SS being reduced by 152kg to 1,400kg, resulted in a top speed of 152mph. Aesthetically, the Merak differed from the otherwise very similar Bora; mainly in sporting an open flying buttresses instead of the Bora's fully glassed rear and offered a second row of seats, suitable for children or small adults.
This genuine SS is one of the last built and has recently undergone an extensive restoration. Stripped to a bare shell, this Maserati has been painstakingly and sympathetically restored. The coachwork has been finished to a high standard in the Maserati colour of Rosso Rubino and is nicely complemented by the Campagnolo alloy wheels shod with new Avon tyres. This Merak’s engine, a newly designed quad-cam three litre V6 for Maserati at the time, has been rebuilt and includes new pistons and timing chains. Importantly, the rebuild included the timing chain modification that reduces wear upon the primary chain, a common weakness on unmodified engines. The suspension and braking systems have not been neglected during this restoration, the suspension has been powder coated and new wheel bearings fitted. The four shock absorbers were overhauled by Candini, the renowned Maserati specialists in Modena, Italy. Works to the cooling system included a re-cored radiator. The interior has generally been left as it was when the car left the factory, due to the low mileage, the black leather seats are nicely patinated, only the carpets were replaced. The front luggage compartment has been beautifully finished with diamond stitching. A good history file accompanies this Merak and includes, invoices, old MoT test certificates, an owner’s handbook by the Maserati Club and a UK V5C registration document. We are also advised that this Maserati will arrive at the sale with a fresh MoT test certificate.
This must be one of the finest examples of the Maserati Merak SS on offer today. All that is left is for a lucky new owner to take advantage of the recent restoration and enjoy its performance, handling and flair."
