Description

"The final incarnation of this simply beautiful grand tourer introduced in 1967 belied a powerful engine beneath its well-made and elegant exterior. Comfort and quality were the watch words of Mercedes-Benz for all their range and there were certainly no short-cuts when it came to the SL. The 2.8 litre, six cylinder produced an impressive 180bhp, 20hp more than the preceding 250SL, thus allowing a top speed of 200km/h and a shorter time to achieve it. The 280 SL's essential user friendliness broadened its appeal beyond the traditional sports car-enthusiast market and many celebrities and film stars owned them. Acquired by its current owner in 2012, a collector of note based in Sussex, the body was immediately stripped of its ancillaries and the remaining shell taken back to bare metal. New wings were required and fitted as well as a new floorpan and sills. The panel gaps are excellent. It was then repainted to a very high standard in Anthracite Grey with the interior an appropriately contrasting Marlboro Red. The carpets were supplied by ‘d:class automotive’, specialists in their field as well as a double duck soft top in black, I don’t think there is a classic car they haven’t trimmed. The engine was rebuilt by Crewe Engines with the gearbox uprated to a Getrag five speed unit, more in keeping with today’s modern motoring conditions. The brakes were renewed, the callipers refurbished and electroplated and new discs and pads were fitted all round. The suspension now benefits from Bilstein shock absorbers and springs naturally assisted by modern Michelin tyres on each corner. Reassuringly, there is a significantly comprehensive history file to accompany this car including its last service in 2018 by Mercedes-Benz specialist, SS Motors. Extremely well restored and in, arguably, the best colour combination, this top-specification SL is very good value indeed."
