1970 Maserati Ghibli SS Coupe 4.9

Ordered on 16th September 1970 through local Maserati dealer Autonautica of Palermo, this 4.9 Litre specification SS Coupe equipped with desirable ZF manual gearbox was delivered to its first owner on 23rd October 1970.

The Maserati Certificate of Origin within the history file confirms that this Ghibli retains its original chassis, engine and body. Finished in Blue Sera (dark blue) paintwork with Senape (Tan) Connolly leather trim, the Ghibli was specified with the uprated 4.9 Litre engine and Autovox stereo.

The Maserati resided in Italy for some forty years and remarkably ownership only passed once between two Italian families who were friends. Acquired by the current owner directly from Italy it was decided to sympathetically restore the Ghibli with the brief to retain as many of the car’s original parts as possible. The body was completely stripped down and a bare shell rotisserie style restoration was carried out with a photographic journal documenting the process along the way. Having spent its entire life in Italy and clearly having been well stored there was very little rust to remove resulting in a very straightforward strip and blast of the metalwork. Whilst disassembling the car, the build number of ‘868’ was discovered stamped and penned into the back of various trim and upholstery parts confirming that the car remained as it had left Officine A. Maserati S.p.A. in 1970.

At this time the original engine received a complete rebuild and a set of uprated forged high compression pistons were fitted. Upon completion the engine was Dyno tested – the results proved healthy with strong power and torque figures achieved (there is a Dyno sheet confirming this within the file).

Connolly, synonymous with supplying the best leather to automotive manufacturers around the world were approached to reproduce the exact same grade of leather used in period to re-upholster the seats and door cards. The results were so well received that Connolly have now reproduced an entire range of hides for Maserati. The carpets, dashboard and headlining were also re-trimmed.

The air conditioning system has been rebuilt and the cooling fans have been uprated as it was deemed the original units did not perform well enough. The only deviation from standard specification was to include a speed sensitive power steering system from industry experts EZ and the fitment of a modern Bluetooth stereo which is completely hidden from view.

Along with a copy of the Automobile Club D’Italia registration document the following Maserati Classiche documents accompany the car; Certificate of Origin, Historical Information Certificate, Technical & Aesthetic Characteristics Certificate, End of Line Data Sheet, Final Tests Data Sheet & Delivery Note.

This is possibly the greatest specification manual Ghibli in existence fresh from restoration with only running-in miles since completion. The restoration alone involved some 3,500 hours and has been completed to the highest standards with exacting levels of accuracy all whilst being documented at each stage of disassembly and rebuild.
