• A masterpiece of Italian design
• Superbly restored car
• Rare colour combination

After World War II, Alfa Romeo radically changed its product strategy and began to make smaller and less expensive cars. The new models were technically sophisticated and their designs were the work of the great names of Italian automobile design, such as Bertone or Pininfarina. The engines, although of small capacity, benefitted from the most advanced technology available at that time, including twin cams and light alloy blocks and heads. After the 1954 launch of the Giulietta Sprint designed by Bertone, the following year Alfa Romeo unveiled a Spider version, which was to find its place in the popular imagination as one of the iconic symbols of contemporary Italian lifestyle, the dolce vita. Along with the Vespa and the Fiat 500, but adding a touch of extra elegance, the Giulietta Spider came to represent the epitome of Italian engineering.

The model which we are offering for sale is a Spider 1300 sold new in Rome in 1961. It recently underwent a complete restoration of both the bodywork and mechanical components. The unusual shade of Graphite Grey has replaced the original red paintwork. The paint has a perfectly smooth finish and all the panel gaps are impeccable. The hood is new and the folding mechanism for the frame in perfect condition. The chrome on the radiator grille and bumpers is magnificent, while all the lights (to the front and rear) are the original Carello units. It should be noted that all the seals have also been replaced. The interior, with its red leatherette upholstery and matching carpets, is to the same high standard. Under the bonnet, the engine and 4-speed gearbox have been overhauled, together with all the running gear. The wiring loom has been remade and all the dashboard instruments are working. On the road, the car is very pleasant to drive, the 4-cylinder twin-cam Alfa engine singing away and its overall handling proving highly satisfactory. It should be noted that in May 2017 work was carried out by August Classics on the water pump and valve seats, to adjust and balance the flywheel and to repair the crankshaft, starter ring-gear and alternator, as well as fitting four new Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres.

The Giulietta Spider 1300 may be regarded as one of Alfa Romeo’s most attractive sports cars and perfectly embodies the post-war spirit of la dolce vita.
