Description

The 356 was conceived in a difficult period for European motoring. It was built in the late 1940s and in terms of design and engineering it was related to the Beetle. Like the famous People’s Car, it had an air-cooled engine mounted in the rear. However, this time after numerous experiments and with a lot more experience, Ferdinand Porsche decided to give it a decidedly sporty character. This was the foundation for the legendary brand and the beginning of its success story.

It is fair to say that the Porsche 356 C presented at our June auction is a vehicle in near-perfect condition. It was brought to Poland less than 20 years ago, at a time when exchange rate of US dollar to Polish Zloty was incredibly attractive. Back then the 356 in condition allowing a trouble-free restoration still could be found for reasonable money. The car was made in the last year of production and is one of 17 thousand examples dubbed the ‘C’. Little is known about earlier history of this vehicle. Currently, the most important thing is the recently completed thorough restoration of the car. The process took around three years and required thousands of manhours. The car was restored according to its factory specification with its original colour combination preserved. Engine serial number matches that of the chassis. Apart from bodywork repairs, the car also had a full engine rebuild. All parts used for restoration are made by renowned manufacturers and will surely be durable. Restoration itself was a carefully prepared process; the quality of work done to the mechanical side or the body- and paintwork is absolutely spotless. The car has not been driven on a public road since completion of the restoration process. One could therefore talk about a ‘zero’ mileage after restoration.

The Porsche 356C is a perfect example of timeless car design. Its distinctive shape served as an inspiration for the 911 model, one of the most legendary cars of all time. The 356 though, as the oldest member of Porsche family, is definitely more collectible. Nowadays it’s incredibly difficult to find an example at such reasonable price level. Despite it being an ideal investment, one should not forget that this vehicle is truly enjoyable to drive. It’s one of the most valuable cars ever to be offered at our auctions.
