When the first Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, designed by Gérard Genta, was unveiled at Baselworld in 1972, it soon became one of the greatest watch icons of the 20th century. In 1993, Audemars Piguet commissioned designer Emmanuel Gueit to modernize the classic and develop a larger and more robust version for younger buyers — this was called the Royal Oak Offshore. The chunky-edged timepiece was such a success at the SIHH Geneva Watch Salon that the company has decided to properly celebrate its 25th anniversary this upcoming spring. In addition to a reissue of the classic chronograph of yesteryear, Audemars Piguet will also release a completely redesigned, extremely futuristic Royal Oak Offshore Tourbillon Chronograph. This new timepiece will be available in two versions — stainless steel and rose gold — and only 50 copies of each will be produced. What better way to celebrate the birthday of an icon?
