Attention Ferrari fanatics: RM Sotheby’s has the auction you’ve dreamt of

As the romantic whirlwind of Ferrari’s 70th anniversary begins to come to a close, RM Sotheby’s and Ferrari have come together to auction off a curated selection from the illustrious back-catalogue of the great firm; although, one particularly dusty Daytona’s attracting more attention than most...

Lightweight car, heavyweight price

Held within Ferrari’s Fiorano Circuit in Maranello on September 9th, the heady combination of a catalogue spanning all seven decades, Italian exuberance, and a celebratory spirit is sure to create a rousing response. Despite the highest estimate attached to the 1960 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione (est. 8.5–10m euros), it was the announcement of the 1969 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta Alloy, the only road-going alloy-bodied Daytona in existence, recently unearthed in Japan after 40 years in storage, that got the collector car world talking. Offered in dusty, dilapidated ‘barn find’ condition, and with an estimate of 1.4–1.7m, this lost lightweight is a sure-fire headliner for the sale.

Greatest hits

Other notable entries in the sale include two examples from two exuberant owners of different eras. From the collection of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, the 1983 Ferrari 400i was one of seven purchased to celebrate a successful European tour for various members of the rock ’n’ roll outfit and has covered just 3,267 kilometres from new (est. 125,000–175,000). While the world-famous 2010 458 Italia ‘Army’, custom-built for Fiat heir and designer Gianni Agnelli, complete with an outlandish camouflage colour scheme and lashings of one-off touches, is sure to raise paddles and eyebrows (est. 250,000–350,000). For followers of Ferrari’s storied racing past, the 1994 348 GT/C LM, one of two built and a Le Mans veteran (est. 390,000–450,000), and the recently rebuilt box-fresh 1994 333SP (est. 2.8–3.3m) are sure to captivate both spectators and bidders alike.
