Description

Designer Paul Bracq’s Mercedes-Benz SL roadster with its iconic “pagoda” roof debuted in 1963 as the six-cylinder 230 SL. Over nine years it gained power and popularity, reaching its zenith with the 120-mph 280 SL. From 1967–1971, 49,812 were built in total.

This exceptional example received a recent high-quality refurbishment by the Mercedes-Benz experts at Classic Cars of Cherry Hill, New Jersey. While it was repainted in its original silver two years ago, the interior was recently reupholstered in blue German leather, and the wood trim was satin-finished. The Becker radio adjoins rebuilt gauges and a new ivory wheel. A blue Haartz cloth top is paired with the original silver hardtop; the windshield and seals are new. Perhaps the most desirable option is the factory four-speed manual gearbox. Of 830 280 SLs sold in the US in 1971, only about 135 had four-speeds.

The consignor acquired this roadster in 2015 and reports it was previously owned by a gentleman in New York state. A full mechanical service included complete inspection, tune-up, new injection pump, Bilstein shocks, stainless steel exhaust, and Firestone Phoenix tires.

The roadster is accompanied by manuals, tools, and jack. With a manual gearbox and high-quality German leather, this wonderfully restored roadster presents a tremendous opportunity and deserves close inspection.
