The 220 S revitalized the Mercedes-Benz line when launched in 1956, and the hand-built cabriolet was the most desirable and exclusive body style. Costing 75% more than a comparable sedan, the cabriolet offered one of the most elegant driving experiences of its era with an interior swathed in high-quality leather and wood. Only 2,178 cabriolets were built, and those remaining still cut an imposing figure of stature and beauty.

This highly collectible 220 S is truly beautiful in its blue paint, gray leather interior, and black top. Although its earliest history is unrecorded, the car was sold in 1968 by the Diamond Ice and Storage Company of Auburn, Washington, to Robert Hallgren of Seattle for $1,500. According to service receipts, the car stayed with Mr. Hallgren until at least 1974 and was carefully maintained by Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz of Seattle and European Motors of Lakewood. The current owner acquired the cabriolet from a collector in Issaquah, Washington, in 2003 and commissioned a stringent restoration performed by Autosport Seattle, supervised by Siegfried Linke, the respected Mercedes-Benz specialist and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® judge.

Today, this 220 S Cabriolet is in lovely condition throughout. The color combination complements the classic 1950s design and the excellence of the restoration has been dutifully maintained, making it an attractive proposition for the discriminating Mercedes-Benz devotee.
