The Model: Economical transportation was most important in a post-war Europe, which might make those who conduct crash-testing cringe had they encountered the Isetta. First shown at the Turin Auto Show in 1953, the original car was created by Renzo Rivolta’s Iso Corporation. The press shows more than just a passing interests and with Iso’s production facilities unable to keep up with demand, several companies, including BMW, made bids to licensing agreements. Powering the BMW version of this 1-door wonder was their own R-27 single cylinder L-head motorcycle engine. BMW’s version of the Isetta proved gain the most notoriety with the majority of the sub-compact vehicles being sold outside the borders of Germany. Fun, unique, charming and a kick in the butt are all ways to describe the Isetta coupe. Before production would come to an end a total of over 160,000 Isettas had been assembled.

The Car: The fun and novel little cars were in truth life-saves, the car that saved BMW from collapse in the late 1950’s. This short, little coupe has been given a complete re-build. All metal panels have been redone and are described at being quite smooth with the front door opening and closing just as engineered. The engine and transmission have most been given an overhauling which has brought them up to factory specs. Passengers are treated to a comfortable ride with matching red and white vinyls. Basic black-wall tires with original BMW hubcaps are used and the chrome has a professional look to them. Among all the micro/novelty cars in the collector’s world today the BMW Isetta is most popular and the legions of collectors have come together and celebrate these innovative little cars. With this example, you too can join this group of eclectic collectors.
