Omega Speedmaster MKII 2014: From behind the shadow of the Moon

The original Omega Speedmaster Professional was the official watch of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969. Some believe the Speedmaster Professional MKII of the same year was inferior – despite sharing the same movement – but a new version sees the MKII thrust back into the limelight…

Though ‘Professional’ has been dropped from the name, the 2014 MKII bears a striking resemblance to the 1969 original, and will be available in two versions: ‘Classic’ and ‘Modern’. While the former is a faithful homage to its predecessor – albeit refreshed with luminous light-green markers decorating the hands and inner hour indicators – the latter caters to those “looking for an iconic design with a bit of colour”, with a fluorescent orange central chronograph seconds hand and matching minute track. As fans of the original MKII, we’re particularly impressed in terms of styling.

A break from tradition

We’re somewhat confused by the decision to break away from Speedmaster tradition by employing a self-winding Co-Axial movement, but few will deny that it’s a solid piece of machinery.

Prices for the 2014 Omega Speedmaster MKII are yet to be announced.
