In 1971, a full decade after the E Type was launched to worldwide acclaim, Jaguar responded to newer competitors’ cars by stealing some of their thunder by launching the Series 3 E-Type. A new 5.3 litre, Jaguar V12 cylinder engine was introduced, together with up-rated brakes and standard power-assisted steering. The short wheelbase, fixed-head coupe body style was discontinued and the V12 was available only as a convertible and 2 2 coupe using the longer wheelbase of the earlier 2 2 models, both of which were easily identifiable by the aggressive, slatted front grille in place of the open radiator intake of Series 1 and 2 cars, flared wheel arches and a badge on the rear that proclaimed them to be V12 models.
