The Ferrari 550 Maranello heralded a new wave of thinking from the legendary marque. For before it was introduced in the mid 1990s the flagship V12 engined cars had normally been mid-engined, following on a development handed down from racing. Owing to new breakthrough technology in suspension and chassis design, Ferrari decided to gamble its name on producing a new front engined supercar that would evoke the tradition of an age gone by. Just as the Daytona had done so in the 70’s by drawing its heritage from the sports cars of the 50’s, the 550 M drew its lines from the legendary Daytona.
The result was a staggering success, with many people claiming that the fabulous V12 Ferrari engine had once again found its rightful place, in front of the driver in a luxurious GT.
