It was BMW‘s 1600 saloon of 1966, with new two door medium-sized bodywork, that really sealed the German manufacturer‘s path on the road to success. Already the company‘s four cylinder, overhead camshaft engine and McPherson strut front and coil spring/trailing arm rear suspension had been proven in its larger four door saloons, and when this was allied to the new 02 Series 1600 it was a recipe well received.
Faster derivatives soon joined the 85bhp 1600: first came the twin carburettor 105bhp 1600ti and then the extremely popular 2002 launched in January 1968. The 2002ti, with its twin carburettors, boasted 120bhp and a top speed of 115mph. To combat the Porsche 911 threat, BMW used the competition only 2002TiK for Group 5 racing ( K denoting a KKK turbocharger). At Le Mans a privately entered 20
