The hugely successful Jaguar XJ-S (later the Jaguar XJS) was produced from 1975 to 1996. The XJ-S replaced the legendary E-Type in September 1975, and was based on the XJ saloon. It had been developed as the XK-F, though it was very different in character from its predecessor. The XJ-S was a competent grand tourer, and more aerodynamic than the E-Type. It initially used the V12 engine of the earlier E-Type, but was to undergo continuous development over its very long production life. The last XJS was produced on 4 April 1996, by when 115,413 had been produced over 21 years.
In 1983, a new 3.6 litre engine débuted, coinciding with a new cabriolet version. The rigorous safety legislation of the era meant that the XJ-SC was produced not as a full convertible but instead had a non-removable
