On its Geneva Show debut in March 1961 the Jaguar E-Type caused a sensation. The promise of its looks was confirmed by a 150mph top speed, and 0-60 and 0-100mph in 6.9 and 16.2 seconds respectively. This car was fast indeed, however the outright speed was combined with superb road holding and remarkable docility. One of the greatest post-war sports cars, Jaguar’s E-Type made immediate headlines on its launch; here was a sleek and beautiful car with a competition pedigree that could be bought for just over £2000, around half the cost of a comparable Aston Martin or Ferrari.
In October 1964 the 3.8 litre model was superseded, with the engine capacity increased from 3,781cc to 4,235cc. Although power remained the same, torque and driveability were improved. It boasted Jaguar’s own all-new synchromes
