During the 1920s Mercedes-Benz concentrated production on its exotic, six cylinder machines such as the SS/SSK models, together with more mundane side valve, six cylinder models for the mass market. These were followed in 1930 by the Type 170 which, with a 1.7 litre four cylinder engine, was the smallest Mercedes-Benz model yet made; it also marked a Mercedes first in having all round independent suspension.
In 1936 the 170 was superseded by the new 170V with a tubular backbone chassis, which was to become the company's best-selling pre-war model. Variations on the chassis including military applications, such as the Kubelwagen and three seater cabriolet models.
