Special Delivery: Louis Vuitton wardrobe trunk hits the auction block

Forget walk-in closets. A world-travelled wardrobe trunk is the new must-have for any sophisticated vintage lover looking for an exceptional storage solution.

An exclusive Louis Vuitton portable closet will go under the hammer at Bonhams later this month – and if you want to raise your style factor, this could be the ideal opportunity.

Since 1854, when Monsieur Louis Vuitton opened his first store in Paris, his name has been synonymous with the ultimate in luxury luggage. The carefully crafted trunks with their monogram canvas coverings evoke memories of the pragmatism and elegance of a bygone era, when travel still involved effort and adventure, hand luggage hadn’t been invented, and no one in their right mind would have dreamed of dragging along his or her precious possessions in a rolling suitcase.

At Bonhams' Goodwood Revival auction, a rich variety of vintage luxury trunks will be offered for sale. Without doubt, the absolute highlight of the collection is the Louis Vuitton monogrammed miniature clothing closet, complete with six canvas covered drawers with leather handles and wooden hangers for delicate garments. The trunk is not only in excellent condition, but it also bears the original label with the manufacturer’s name and serial number. When it goes on sale on 15 September, this mobile wardrobe is sure to be the object of admiration among LV enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The LV portable clothing closet is estimated at £800-1200; however, prices for highly sought-after trunks can range from £3,000 to £30,000 upwards.
