Ex-De Laurentiis Ferrari Stars at Bonhams' 3 March 2012 Sale

In a sale grossing £1.3m, the top-selling car was the ‘barn-find’ 1960s Ferrari 250 GTE once owned by Italian film producer Agostino ‘Dino’ De Laurentiis. The dusty silver Ferrari was sold to a UK-based telephone bidder for £101,180.

The De Laurentiis Ferrari was joined by another car with celebrity status, the ex-Elton John 1965 Jaguar E-type 4.2-Litre Series I Roadster.

While not quite the iconic symbol of masculinity typified by Steve McQueen or Pedro Rodriguez, perhaps, the most famous product of Pinner (who turns out some popular tunes and is a bit handy on the piano) commands enough kudos to see a sale price for the red roadster of £82,140.

Then again, another convertible, late-Series 1 ‘E’ sold for £91,100.

With just one withdrawn entry, Bonhams must be pleased with the otherwise 100% sales rate.

Other cars of interest to the average Classic Driver that found new owners included the 1953 Bentley R-Type Shooting Brake (£55,200), the 1992 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 (£8,050) and the £55,200, 1966 Citroën DS21 Décapotable.

Bonhams’ next UK motor car sale will be at the RAF Museum, Hendon on 30 April. Its annual Monaco auction will take place on Friday, 11 May.
