1973 Volkswagen Coccinelle Cabriolet

In 1934, the Third Reich commissioned Ferdinand Porsche to design a « car for the people ». The onset of war delayed this plan, and it was not until the end of hostilities that production of the Beetle began. By 1955 a million examples had rolled off the production line and by the start of the 1970s some ten million Beetles had been built !
The model, known for its mechanical robustness, is offered here in a convertible form, with black leather interior and powered by an air-cooled flat-four 1300cc engine. What makes this example special is that it was one of the 16 publicity cars for the Tour de France cycle race (from 1993 to 2009), dressed in supermarket « Champion » livery, the main sponsor of the polka dot jersey (King of the Mountains). This livery consists of stickers.

The car, having crossed numerous alpine passes and paraded cheerfully on the Champs Elysées, shows 109,000 km on the odometer. It is presented in very good overall condition and much work has been carried out on the car : it has four new tyres, it has been rewired, front and rear brakes have been refurbished and the front suspension ball joints have been changed.

The company Carrefour, owner of this unique car, are selling it to raise funds exclusively for the charity « Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque – Enfants du Monde. » Here is a one-off opportunity for a cycling enthusiast to take the whole family for a ride while helping others at the same time.

« Founded in 1996 by Professeur Francine Leca and Patrice Roynette, Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque enables children with heart malformations from poorer countries to undergo surgery in France when they lack the technical and financial means to be cared for in their home country. The average cost of treatment for one child is €12,000. More than 2000 children have already been helped since the charity was set up privately. Donations and information : www.mecenat-cardiaque.org.
