The first appearance of the name WRX came with the first generation of the Subaru Impreza, which was sold in Japan in 1992. With the debut of a road car, Subaru used the Impreza designed for rally instead of a larger Legacy. The Impreza WRX then offered a model with four-wheel drive and rear differential, more rigid suspension and a boxer turbo engine.
