Established in 1984 to contest the C2 class of the World Endurance Championship, Silverstone-based Spice Engineering had come about after Gordon Spice''s plans to run a Ford C100 in the 1983 WEC came to nought, leading him to share a Tiga GC83-Chevrolet with Neil Crang. Tiga Cars, of course, had been founded in 1975 by former Grand Prix drivers, Australian Tim Schenken and New Zealander Howden Ganley, and primarily produced Formula Ford single seaters. It was during 1982, however, that at Crang''s request, it had started work on a WEC machine, the GC83, and on its debut in the Brands Hatch 1000Km Crang and Spice finished in an encouraging 13th place, a seventh place followed at Imola and for 1984 the decision was taken to contest the WEC''s C2 junior class with Ray B
