When Ford introduced the Mustang for the 1965 model year, its runaway success exceeded all expectations. It was the car for the moment and it sold more in its first styling phase (1965-66) than it ever would again. It tended to be revised every couple of years and with every up-date the weight increased and production fell.
It was the original concept which the public liked, and when most people think of a Mustang they still think of the 1965/6 fastback coupé, although it actually sold only a fraction of the numbers which the notchback version did. The reason is simple: all the Shelby versions were fastbacks and it is the Shelby car that catches the imagination. Nearly 1,300,000 Mustangs were sold in the first two years but only 2,040 cars passed through the hands of Carroll Shelby.
