Description
Chassis No. 36173
Engine No. 36173
Introduced in the autumn of 1932, the new Rover 14/6 Speed Pilot, also known as the "Speed Fourteen," utilized a lengthened, under-slung chassis with an overhead-valve, 1,577 cc inline-six with triple carburetors. The new chassis allowed for a new range of attractive, streamlined, low-line bodies in saloon and coupe form, along with the option of a bespoke creation by an independent coachbuilder.
Lavishly priced when new, the Speed Pilot featured numerous standard features, including a freewheeling four-speed transmission, hydraulic brakes, Luvax-Bijur automatic lubricator, and even electric windshield wipers. When tested in April 1933, Autocar magazine found the Speed Pilot to be a potent performer in its class as it could go zero to 50 miles per hour in 12.8 seconds and a 77 mile-per-hour top speed.
The car on offer features stylish Sports Tourer coachwork from Carbodies of Coventry, England. Previous research shows that it was previously owned by Dutch Rover aficionado Harry Hildgerdenaar. It is understood that a complete restoration was commissioned during his ownership. The car was refinished with its current two-tone grey livery and a complementary charcoal grey leather interior in a similar pattern to the original. The engine is also believed to have been completely rebuilt to original specification at the same time. Completing the power train for this Rover is an ENV synchronized four-speed manual transmission with freewheeling ability.
More recently, the car has received a cosmetic refreshment within the last year. This work includes refinishing the paint, retrimming the top, fitting a new tonneau cover, and replating the chrome trim. Accompanying the car is an extensive history file filled in two binders and is complete with its original registration card.
