A British sedan with an aluminium Buick V8 engine and a spare wheel stuck on the boot, only one car answers to that description; The Rover P6 3500. When Rover initially developed the model, they did not forsee that eventually the car would have a V8 engine. An experiment turbine engine did not work out, so when the American Rover director stumbled over a Buick V8 engine, he noticed that it was not much bigger than the 4 cylinder currently being used. As the weight was more or less equal and it would fit into the P6 fairly easily, Rover bought the rights to use the Buick V8 engine. They put it in the P6, named it the Rover P6 3500 and enjoyed immediate success. The car develops 184 Hp delivered through a 3-speed automatic. The RoverP6’s advanced suspension system is responsible for the quite modern feel of its roadholding and handling. The suspension was that advanced that when the model started to show its age the British automobile press hailed it as being the only part that had yet to age. The V8 meant the battery had to be moved into the boot space. Together with the spare wheel they consumed quite a bit of boot space. Many owners therefore choose the option of having the spare fitted on top of the boot lid, as is the case with our original Dutch supplied 1975 example. The car is in fine fettle. The bodywork is in good shape with nice, correctly aligned panels. The state of the paintwork is also fine with minimal signs of wear. The interior trim has been well looked after with lovely beige leather trim. All instruments and switches are, of course, in good working order. Mechanically this Rover P6 3500 is very good shape. The supple engine runs smoothly. The automatic shifts perfectly and suits the car’s relaxed driving characteristics. The suspension is also still very good and exemplifies the fact that this car was built with comfort in mind. This British classic was made to eat the miles and despite it 45 years will let you step out as fresh as when you started. Gallery Aaldering is Europe’s leading Classic Cars specialist since 1975!
