In the early 1930s, manufacturers of luxury cars competed in excesses: Hispano- Suiza developed a 12-cylinder car, Cadillac went even further with its 16-cylinders. Rolls-Royce couldn't be left out, especially since the manufacturer had had valuable experience in aviation. So Rolls-Royce designed a V12 engine in light alloy of 7338cc displacement, with OHV, developing 165bhp, mated to a four-speed gearbox. A car made regardless of cost, the Phantom III received the best bodies that the buyers could get, from the likes of Mulliner, Barker, Hooper, Park Ward, Thrupp & Maberly, etc. Just a little over 700 Phantom IIIs were made between 1936 and 1939, and it was not until 1998 that one would find a V12 under the hood of a Rolls-Royce again.
Leaving the factory in July 1938, this car was delivered new to its first owner, H H Harjes, in August 1939. The car is clothed in a beautiful Park Ward body, which manages to express elegance and fluidity unusual for a car of this size. The design is in the purest "razor edge" style and has a very fine line for the roof typical of Park Ward, plus, the car has a sunroof. Inside, this large saloon has all the sophistication that matches its status, with comfortable beige leather seats, generous and impeccable woodwork and door trim, with red velvet bringing their touch of intimacy to this a richly equipped interior. This car appears in the book by Lawrence Dalton, "Rolls Royce, The Derby Phantoms " with its benchmark Park Ward body .
In 2006, this beautiful car entered the Dutch collection of Anton aan de Stegge. Owner of one of the largest construction companies in the Netherlands, Mr aan de Stegge had the means to give his car the best possible treatment, so they are all extremely meticulous in all points of view, to the point where each of the cars are all set to drive overnight thousands of kilometers, for immediate departure to a country of one's choice. This is the case too of this Phantom III. In the silence and smoothness of its noble V12, it is ready to take passengers for a trip steeped in luxury and opulence.
