This particular car was specifically built for the French Rally Championship and was driven by none other than the famous Jean Ragnotti. Compliant to new regulating "Kit Car" specifications, this is the eleventh in the series of 37 Clio Maxi chassis assembled by MATTER and Renault Sport, the only ones authorised according to the FIA's homologation extension document No A-5433. Produced to be exclusively fitted on Clio Williams, the kit included spectacular bodywork elements, specific running gear with adjustable front triangles, a tubular cradle and an adjustable rear axle with 4 welded bars. As for the engine, the Renault Clio Williams F7R block was preserved but yet optimised to 250 hp, thanks to the installation of new intake and exhaust manifolds, specific connecting rods and a four-throttle multi-points injection.
With over 140 race starts in almost 10 seasons, this Clio Maxi has a substantial and well documented track record. Entered for the 1995 season by Simon racing, "57K10" was damaged by Jean Ragnotti in the fourth time trial of the Limousin Rally; the bodywork was then sold by Renault Sport to Benny Reapers, Belgian race preparer and Renault specialist. Rebuilt with a new engine, the car will race in the hands of Kris Princen, the official Renault racing driver and the future Belgian Champion. He took part with this car in the Belgian Championship and also in some other great racing events such as the Rally of San Remo (which was then included in the 1998 World Championship calendar) and in the Rallye du Var or Le Touquet, both part of French rally stages. Sold to a French racing driver, it makes its way back to France and in the Criterium des Cevennes in 1999. Since then, "57K10" would not leave France and it will then be seen at the start of the 2000 and 2001 editions of the Lyon Charbonniere, as well as the "Mont Blanc" event, all included in the French Rally Championship. The car will then be passed onto several owners (all racing drivers) and will take part in multiple finals of the Coupe de France des Rallyes, which resulted in no less than twelve scratch victories. It then benefited from a restoration after which it regained its livery from the 1995 season, the Team DIAC racing colours. Acquired in 2015 by its current owner, the bodywork is today in very good condition for such a racing beast and has not lost any of its performance and liveliness. Remaining in compliance with FIA homologation, it can participate in major historic races such as the Eifel Rallye, an event specifically reserved for authentic racings cars that have marked the history of rally racing. The car comes with its on-board package which includes, among other components, two cardan shafts and the original airbox. Known for its legendary status in its generation, acquiring such as rally car is a rare opportunity to be seized immediately.
